Why the Assessor’s Office Matters
-
The Shelby County Assessor of Property is responsible for maintaining accurate property records and determining the value of property across the county.
-
Those values affect how property taxes are calculated for homeowners, businesses, and rental properties.
-
When assessments are accurate and applied consistently, people have confidence that the system is fair.
-
When records are outdated or processes are unclear, it creates confusion, appeals, and distrust.
-
The Assessor’s Office also plays an important role in housing stability. Property assessments influence the cost of owning a home, operating a business, and developing new housing.
-
Clear records, transparent processes, and consistent valuation help communities plan responsibly, support neighborhood investment, and protect access to quality affordable housing.
-
The office should operate with discipline, accuracy, and respect for every taxpayer.
A good Assessor does three things well:
-
Maintains accurate records
-
Implements the law consistently
-
Treats taxpayers fairly
That is the standard Michael O. Harris is committed to bringing to the Shelby County Assessor’s Office.
What I Will Do
Make the process clear.
Citizens deserve to understand how property values are determined and what options are available to them. We will provide plain explanations, clear timelines, and practical guidance. The Assessor’s website will be updated to be user-friendly and designed to help residents find the information they need quickly.
Deliver superior service.
When citizens call, email, or walk into the office, they should receive answers — not obstacles. We will establish clear service standards and measure how well we meet them. A citizen satisfaction survey will be implemented, and I will personally review each one.
Fairness × Accuracy × Efficiency = Superior Service
Lead with collaboration and stewardship.
The Assessor’s Office does not operate in isolation. When government offices fail to coordinate, citizens are often sent from place to place without resolution. We will strengthen coordination across county departments so problems can be addressed more efficiently and residents can get the help they need without unnecessary barriers.
This stewardship is more than administration. It is service to our community.
A Culture of Competence
This campaign is not about noise or politics. It is about competence and accountability. It is time to choose clearer processes, superior service, and collaborative leadership in the Assessor’s Office — beginning on day one.
I’m Michael O. Harris, and I would be honored to earn your vote for Shelby County Assessor of Property.
